The Brothers in Bangladesh

The Chapel

In 2021, after having lived for 30 years in Mymensingh town and fifteen years in Chittagong and Dhaka, the Brothers in Bangladesh moved to the countryside. They took over an abandoned clinic, once run by the Church of Bangladesh, in the forest of Madhupur, some 50 kilometres south-west of Mymensingh. This was a major change for several reasons. It was the first time the Brothers had settled outside the city, in an almost completely Christian and indigenous environment.

The village of Thanarbaid (and its surrounding area) is inhabited only by Garo and Mandai, two ethnic minority groups of Mongolian origin. While the Garos are Christian, the Mandai are Hindus. The overwhelming majority of the population of Bangladesh, Bengali Muslims, are absent.

In Mymensingh, the Brothers had been much involved in work with the disabled and with street children. The contact with these groups remain and they sometimes come for visits or picnics. The move to the countryside, however, changed the focus. Agriculture is still the backbone of this heavily overpopulated country, but it is rife with unethical and dangerous practice (overuse of pesticides and fertilizers, artificial ripening of fruits etc.) and plagued by injustice. Loan sharks are active everywhere in the countryside and the ethnic minorities are particularly vulnerable.

The Brothers are currently trying to develop ways in which the land of the minority population can be protected and safely cultivated, with the proceeds not increasing the difference between the affluent and the poor, but strengthening the common good.
